It’s officially summer, and while swimming is a great way to beat the heat, it also comes with real risks. Manchester-by-the-Sea Fire has responded to two water-related emergencies in the past week, reminding us of the importance of water safety.
Fun Fact: Cold water can incapacitate you in seconds. Even when the air feels warm, water below 60°F can trigger a cold shock response, causing involuntary gasping, rapid breathing, and loss of coordination. This can happen in pools, lakes, or even the ocean.
Water Safety Tips:
- Never swim alone.
- Learn CPR — your actions can save a life before help arrives.
- Know your limits — cold or unfamiliar water can be dangerous.
- Alcohol and water-related activities are never a good mix.
- Always supervise children around water — no distractions.
- Keep a phone and a flotation device nearby or even better – WEAR IT!
- Be in pairs during water-related activities.
- Learn CPR it saves lives!
Let’s keep summer safe, fun, and emergency-free. A little preparation goes a long way!
