Did you know that your Fire Department Paramedics are trained to perform advanced skills known as Medical Director Options? One of these skills is the surgical cricothyroidotomy, which allows them to insert a special breathing tube directly into the neck when traditional methods are not possible. Thankfully, this procedure is rare and is classified as one of our HALO (High Acuity Low Occurrence) skills. To ensure proficiency, these skills must be practiced regularly. In the photo, you can see Group 1 participating in a skills session. While we hope never to use this skill, please take comfort in knowing that your paramedics are prepared to act if the situation arises.
