Basement Fire Quickly Contained on Norwood Avenue

At 12:57 PM yesterday, North Shore Regional 911 alerted the Manchester Fire Department to a reported basement fire at 61 Norwood Avenue.

Due to the initial 911 report of an active fire, Essex Fire Department was automatically dispatched, along with an ‘All-Tone’ which is a recall of Manchester call firefighters and off-duty personnel.

Assistant Chief Robert Cavender (C2) was first to arrive on scene and was met by a construction worker who confirmed an active basement fire. The fire reportedly started during a plumbing repair. Based on conditions, C2 transmitted a first alarm, bringing additional resources—including an engine from Hamilton Fire Department—to the scene.

Beauport Ambulance Service provided EMS standby during the incident and the Manchester Police Department secured the area so apparatus could operate safely.

Units operating at the scene included Manchester C2, Ladder 1, Engine 1, and Ambulance 1, along with Essex Ladder 1. Additional mutual aid coverage was provided by engines from Wenham Fire Department and Ipswich Fire Department, as well as a ladder company from Gloucester Fire Department who covered the Town of Manchester while Manchester Fire units were tied up.

The fire was brought under control quickly. There were no reported injuries. The home sustained damage to the basement area, along with some smoke damage throughout the structure; however, the residence remains habitable.

The Manchester Fire Department would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance and continued support.
