Fun Fact Friday: Blood on the Road Can Save Lives

This week, the Manchester Fire and Police Departments had the opportunity to learn from Paramedic Ryan Mueller of Lawrence General Hospital about their innovative Blood Transport Program. Ryan provided two classes to ensure that the majority of our staff received this vital information.

Did you know? Blood transfusions aren’t just for the hospital anymore. In the right circumstances, getting blood to a critically injured patient minutes earlier can literally mean the difference between life and death.

You might wonder… “Why Lawrence General?”

While Lawrence may seem like an unlikely partner, there are times when weather prevents medical helicopters from flying. During prolonged incidents or when transporting a critically injured patient to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, Lawrence General’s blood truck can respond directly to the scene or intercept our ambulance, allowing lifesaving blood products to be administered much sooner.

Manchester Fire and Police are always looking ahead—staying current with the latest science, technology, and best practices to ensure we provide the highest level of care to our residents and visitors.

One final reminder: None of this is possible without blood donors. Donating blood is one of the simplest ways to make a lifesaving difference for someone you’ll likely never meet.
