Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting the capabilities of your Manchester Firefighters. The Manchester-by-the-Sea Fire Department operates at the Paramedic (Advanced Life Support – ALS) level—the highest level of pre-hospital emergency medical care available in the field.
So what does that actually mean for you?
Paramedics are highly trained medical professionals who go far beyond basic first aid. In addition to all EMT-level skills, our paramedics can:
💉 Administer a wide range of life-saving medications
🫀 Perform advanced cardiac care, including cardiac monitoring and defibrillation
🫁 Manage airways using advanced techniques such as intubation and surgical airways
📈 Interpret EKGs to identify heart attacks in real time
🚑 Provide critical care interventions during transport to the hospital
This level of care allows us to begin hospital-quality treatment right at your side—whether at home, on the road, or anywhere in our community.
But it doesn’t stop there…
Manchester Fire serves as the primary EMS responder for the community, delivering advanced life support care when it matters most. We work as a cohesive team alongside our police officers, who are an integral part of every response.
In addition to serving our residents, Manchester Fire provides paramedic-level mutual aid to neighboring communities and supports private ambulance services during periods of high call volume. In return, these partners are there for us when our resources are stretched—ensuring seamless, reliable care across the region.
